"The Island of MONA or ANGLESEY is in circumference 60 Miles, contains about 200,000 Acres, 74 Parishes & 1840 Houses, has 2 Market Towns, one of which (viz.) Beaumaris sends a Member to Parliament. This Island was anciently called Insula Opaca, from the great quantity of Wood with which it was over grown, but now it is very bare of trees especially in ye Northern & Western parts. The Principal Comodities of this Island are Corn, Cattle, Fish & Fowl, which it produces in such abundance that the Welsh call it Mam Cymru, i.e. the Mother or Nurse of Wales. The Air at certain times by reason of the Mists and Foggs that proceed from ye Irish Sea is Aguish. The Soil is Rocky and Mountainous, it affords plenty of Grind Stones, Milstones, &c." Gwynedd Family History Society have published a selection of census indexes
Neil Summers' Amlwch data site has an index of the 1881 census for Anglesey
1841, 1861, 1871, 1891 & 1901 censuses for the whole of Anglesey. Dave Wilson has produced these on separate single cds for each census year, except for 1901 which has two.
They consist of the images of the original pages, an alphabetical index of the people in the census, and a parish map for the county with a list of the parishes, etc.

National Library of Wales Manuscripts and Records. An online searchable index of Marriage Bonds and Allegations.It contains details of some 90,000 marriages by licence which took place in Wales between 1616 and 1837.

IGI Batch Numbers-British Isles
It is not always easy to locate your ancestors on the IGI using the search mechanisms provided at the above LDS site. Manually typing the batch numbers into the IGI search screen can be tedious. Hugh Wallis has made an exhaustive search of the likely ranges of batch numbers and created a database of those numbers and the source records that they apply to. A very powerful feature included is a hotlink from each batch number to the actual search engine provided at the Family Search site, including the ability to enter the surname you are looking for. This makes it very easy to search all the batches for a particular geographic location using just the last name you are searching for - something that is not possible directly from the LDS site without doing a lot of typing. Certificates of birth, death and marriage can be obtained from the Superintendent Registrar at the following District Register Office:
North Wales BMD Births, Marriages and Deaths on the internet. Clwyd and Gwynedd Family History Societies, and Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society are collaborating with the local Registration Services to make the indexes to these records freely searchable via the Internet. Although the indexes are not yet complete for all years and districts, it is hoped that the database will eventually cover all North Wales births, marriages and deaths for the years 1837 to 1950.
The UK BMD web site offers links to over 400 web sites that provide on-line information for UK births, marriages and deaths and censuses.
Marriages on Anglesey from 1837 to 1937 with later church marriages complete up to the Welsh language act of April 1971. Dave Wilson has produced indexes of these marriages on cd.
The images for these are
not available for public viewing and only an index of Brides and Grooms can be produced. There is an index by groom and another by the bride, the name of each is given and so it easy to see which bride married which groom, it also includes date and year of marriage and the church where the marriage took place. In the case of 'civil ' marriages the registration book in which it is recorded is listed; the marriage may have taken place in a registry office or a chapel. On Caryl Williams's site - Passenger list for the ship 'Higginson' sailing from Caernarfonshire with 141 Welsh Emigrants on board and arriving in New York May 18th 1850. Most of these 141 passengers were Welsh people from Merionethshire and the County of Anglesey, six were English. The Ship left Caernarfon on April 9th with 141 passengers and arrived at New York with the same number.
